How to Clean Performance Fabric the Right Way

Performance fabric is designed for real life—spills, smudges, snack-time chaos, and the occasional how did that get there? moment. It’s one of the reasons we recommend it so often for families, pet owners, and anyone who actually lives in their home.

But here’s the part that trips people up:
Even the most durable fabric still needs to be cleaned the right way.

The good news? Caring for performance fabric is far easier than most people expect. With a gentle approach and a few simple steps, you can keep your furniture looking fresh, clean, and beautiful for years to come—no harsh chemicals, no stress required.

Performance Fabric Is Easy… When You Know How to Clean It

Performance fabric has earned its reputation as a game-changer. It resists stains, repels moisture, and holds up beautifully to everyday wear. But durability doesn’t mean indestructible, and improper cleaning can actually shorten the life of the fabric.

At Common Thread Interiors, we spend a lot of time educating clients on how to care for their furniture—not just how to choose it. Because when performance fabric is treated correctly, it truly delivers on its promise.

What Is Performance Fabric, Really?

Performance fabric isn’t a single material—it’s a category of fabrics engineered for durability and easy maintenance.

Common Performance Fabric Types

What These Fabrics Are Designed to Do

  • Resist stains and spills
  • Repel moisture
  • Clean easily with mild solutions
  • Maintain color and texture over time

Why Proper Cleaning Matters

Cleaning performance fabric the right way:

  • Preserves the fabric’s protective finish
  • Prevents residue buildup
  • Keeps furniture looking newer, longer

The Right Way to Clean Performance Fabric (Step by Step)

Before you panic—or grab something too aggressive—take a breath. Most messes come out easily with this simple process.

Step 1: Blot—Don’t Rub

As soon as a spill happens, gently blot the area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel.
Do not rub. Rubbing can push stains deeper into the fibers.

Step 2: Use Mild Soap + Water

Mix a small amount of gentle dish soap with lukewarm water. Dampen a clean cloth and gently blot the stained area.
Less is more—you’re lifting the stain, not soaking the fabric.

Step 3: Rinse + Blot Again

Using a separate cloth dampened with clean water, blot the area to remove any soap residue. This step is important—leftover soap can attract dirt over time.

Step 4: Air Dry

Let the fabric dry naturally. Avoid heat, hair dryers, or direct sunlight unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.

Erin Tip 💡 (From Real Life)

I get asked this a lot, so here’s my honest answer: I wash my performance fabric covers on COLD—and yes, that’s usually absolutely OK.

That said—always check the manufacturer’s care instructions first. Cold water is what I recommend most of the time because it’s gentler on the fabric, helps preserve the stain-resistant finish, prevents shrinking, and keeps colors looking better longer. Pair it with a gentle cycle, mild detergent, skip the fabric softener, and air dry when possible.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even with performance fabric, a few missteps can cause problems:

  • Using abrasive scrubbers or stiff brushes
  • Applying harsh or unknown chemicals
  • Saturating the fabric
  • Skipping the rinse step
  • Assuming all performance fabrics behave the same

When in doubt, gentle and minimal always wins.

Spot Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning

When DIY Is Perfectly Fine

  • Everyday spills and food mishaps
  • Small stains
  • High-touch areas like armrests
  • Light pet messes

When to Call a Professional

  • Annual maintenance cleaning
  • Large or widespread spills
  • Lingering odors
  • Heavily used family rooms

A professional upholstery cleaning once a year can dramatically extend the life of your furniture.

Recommended Products & Tools

You don’t need a cabinet full of specialty cleaners. A few basics go a long way:

  • Soft microfiber cloths
  • Mild dish soap or Woolite
  • Enzyme-based cleaners for pet messes
  • Portable upholstery cleaners (like the Bissell Little Green)
