6 Fixable Interior Design Mistakes That Keep Your Home from Feeling Finished

You’ve bought the furniture, picked the paint, and hung the curtains—but something still feels off. If your home feels more “almost there” than “pulled together,” you’re not alone.

At Common Thread Interiors, we hear this all the time from new clients:

“It just doesn’t feel finished.”

Here’s the truth: beautiful, cohesive rooms are rarely created by accident. It’s the little details—layering, lighting, and layout—that take a room from fine to phenomenal.

Below are five common interior design mistakes that leave a space feeling incomplete—and what you can do to fix them.

1. Your Rug Is Too Small (or Missing Altogether)

A rug does more than warm up a space—it anchors it. Without the right size rug, furniture can feel like it’s floating.

The fix:
Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your furniture to rest on it. For living rooms, that often means an 8×10 or 9×12 at minimum.

2. You’re Underestimating Lighting

One overhead fixture can’t do all the heavy lifting. Good lighting layers are essential for setting the right mood and functionality.

The fix:
Use a mix of ambient (ceiling lights), task (lamps, sconces), and accent (picture lights, under-cabinet lighting) in every room. Lighting should feel intentional, not like an afterthought.

3. Your Art Isn’t Working (Wrong Size, Placement, or Grouping)

Blank walls can make a room feel stark, but even when there is art, it’s often not the right scale or is hung too high. Small pieces floating on a large wall or scattered without intention can leave your space feeling disjointed instead of designed.

The fix:
Think of art as part of your room’s architecture. Hang pieces at eye level—typically 57–60 inches from the floor to the center—and scale them to the wall. Use large-scale pieces where possible or group smaller works into cohesive gallery walls with consistent spacing and framing. The goal is to create connection and visual balance, not clutter.

4. Your Space Lacks Layers

A room without layers—pillows, throws, mixed materials, natural textures—can come off flat and lifeless.

The fix:
Layer in softness with textiles: a chunky throw on the sofa, a velvet pillow next to a linen one, or a textured lampshade on a sleek side table. Thoughtful contrast makes a space feel lived-in and loved.

5. It’s Missing the Finishing Touches

Bookshelves without books. Coffee tables without trays. Kitchens without counter styling. These are the details that pull a room together and make it feel like home.

The fix:
Bring in the finishing pieces: trays, bowls, baskets, a vase of greenery. Accessories should reflect your style—but they should also have intention and scale. Need help? This is where designers shine.

6. Your Window Treatments Are Missing or Misplaced and… Why Custom Is Worth It

Bare windows can make a space feel cold and echoey, and poorly sized treatments (too short, too narrow, hung too low) can throw off the proportions of the room.

We get it—online curtain shopping seems easy. But here’s the catch: mass-produced panels are almost never the right length, width, or weight. They often fall short (literally), leaving your room looking skimpy or awkwardly proportioned.

The fix:
Custom window treatments are tailored not just to your windows, but to your room. They consider height, scale, function, fabric weight, and lining. They hang beautifully, last longer, and elevate everything around them. Whether it’s sleek Roman shades or floor-grazing panels, custom gives your space the polish that off-the-shelf never can.
